Sergio Pereira | Bossa+ Review
by Illiam Sebitz
Sergio Pereira’s latest offering, Bossa+, presents a captivating exploration of the intersection between traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian jazz. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Pereira’s musical foundation was built upon the rich cultural tapestry of bossa nova, samba, and the influential works of icons like João Gilberto and Tom Jobim. His journey through the vibrant 60s and 70s of Rio’s music scene, followed by a transformative period in New York under the tutelage of jazz greats, has culminated in a sound rooted in tradition and expansively innovative.
Bossa+, released on April 24, 2024, under Tiger Turn, LLC, features a remarkable ensemble of international musicians, including the esteemed Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo and Cuban pianist Ivan “Melon” Lewis. The album’s live studio recordings capture the group’s spontaneous synergy, blending the intricacies of jazz with the soulful rhythms of Brazil.
The opening track, “Bossa,” sets the tone with its romantic bossa nova feel, a genre known for its subtle, alluring rhythmic patterns and emotional sensuality. Pereira’s nylon-strung guitar’s warm, lyrical quality is complemented by Luis Guerra’s expressive piano chords and fills. Chipi Chacon’s flügelhorn performs the melody with class and expression, creating a dialogue that invites the listener into a world of musical amorousness.
In “Sea of Love,” Pereira shows versatility by mixing a funky feel with his Bossa sensibilities. His light vocals match his guitar tone beautifully. Ariel Ramirez’s bass and Mauricio Zottarelli’s drums support Pereira’s vocal delivery, allowing him to bring the song’s romantic atmosphere to the fore.
“One for Pat” introduces a new ensemble featuring Lewis on piano, Ivan Ruiz Machado on bass, and Jose San Martin on drums. The interplay between the musicians is profound with respect and knowledge of the bossa nova tradition. Pereira’s wordless voice and guitar lead a delicate melody over the dancing rhythm section. Machado’s bass solo is melodious and elegant. The inclusion of Lubambo’s violao and Lewis’ piano skills bring a new and exciting texture and authenticity as the ensemble performs a magical contemporary Brazilian composition by Pereira.
The dynamic “Montgo” offers a journey through various rhythmic landscapes, with its energetic Latin feel and engaging ensemble hits. Luis Guerra’s passionate piano solo is a highlight, driving the track with a sense of advancing motion and excitement. The composition’s multiple sections showcase Pereira’s skill as a composer, balancing complexity with accessible melodies and solos. In the interlude and last time through the form, Pereira sings along with his guitar, creating an exquisite hue of Brazilian flair.
This track exquisitely portrays “Saudades,” a term that encapsulates the profound sense of longing often found in Brazilian music. The interplay between the musicians, particularly during the exchanges between Pereira and Lubambo, showcases their deep understanding of the genre’s subtleties and ability to evoke its emotional nuances.
In “Desamor (Verão Boreal),” Pereira’s expressive vocals take center stage, conveying a sense of Brazilian playfulness. His emotive vocals, sung in Portuguese, add an authentic layer of emotional depth to the song, reflecting the rich cultural nuances inherent in Brazilian music. Chacon’s trumpet, with its soulful fills, complements the mood, creating a poignant narrative that resonates with the listener.
The album closes with a lively rendition of the jazz standard “There Will Never Be Another You.” Here, the ensemble blends straight-ahead jazz with Latin elements, showcasing their versatility and deep musicality.
Bossa+ is a fine representation of Sergio Pereira’s journey as an artist. It seamlessly blends the traditional Bossa rhythms with the modern, the personal with the universal. The seven songs pay homage to Pereira’s Brazilian roots but also embrace the broader spectrum of world music and jazz, making it a significant addition to his discography. Through its live recording approach, the album captures the essence of Pereira’s artistic vision—a celebration of life, love, and the unifying power of Brazilian music.
