Wendy Eisenberg : Wendy Eisenberg Review

by Bea Willis

Wendy-Eisenberg-5-Finger-Review-CDWendy Eisenberg’s self-titled LP marks a decisive shift in approach, but not in identity. Rather than stepping away from their improvisational roots, Eisenberg reframes them by translating her instinct for spontaneity into the architecture of song. The result is a record built on a quiet but persistent tension as these are composed pieces never fully settle. Instead their guided by a principle that runs through the entire album, surprise.

Set against this shift in approach is a record shaped by continuity. Recorded at Figure 8 in Brooklyn with Trevor Dunn on bass, Ryan Sawyer on drums, and Mari Rubio contributing pedal steel, synthesizer, and strings. Wendy Eisenberg operates as a collaborative extension of Eisenberg’s compositional language as a singer-songwriter and improviser. The album emerges from a period of personal and creative reassessment, structured as an internal dialogue across time, where emotions are processed through song. What distinguishes her writing is how these ideas are embedded in the music as it moves, shifts, and resists full resolution.

From the opening moments of “Take A Number,” that principle is already in motion. A hypnotic arpeggiated guitar figure establishes continuity, while Eisenberg’s vocal enters with a clear, almost matter-of-fact delivery. On the surface, the structure feels grounded. Beneath it, harmonic movement subtly shifts, and the entrance of strings adds emotional shading that complicates the frame. The song bends your anticipated patterns. That same logic expands in “Meaning Business,” where a strummed guitar foundation gives way to a more angular, jazz-adjacent single-note figure in one part of the vocal melody. The transition into the chorus arrives with an unexpected change in feel, logical but surprising. Improvisation is built into the composition.

This is where Eisenberg’s improvisational background becomes most tangible. The creative act of discovery has beenWendy-Eisenberg-5-Finger-Review-1 distilled into in the material itself. Each phrase seems to anticipate and redirect expectation. The songs are structured, but they move with the internal logic of improvisation as unexpected phrase lengths join subtle shifts in rhythmic feel and harmonic turns that avoid full resolution. What would traditionally be spontaneous is instead composed, edited, and fixed in place without losing its unpredictability.

The ensemble plays a role in maintaining that balance. On “Old Myth Dying,” the band doesn’t simply support the song. Band members shape its trajectory. Trevor Dunn’s bass provides harmonic grounding, anchoring the movement even as surrounding textures evolve. Ryan Sawyer moves fluidly between timekeeping and color, using snare patterns to guide dynamic growth rather than enforce strict pulse.

Mari Rubio’s contributions of pedal steel, synthesizer, and strings function as textural and structural elements. Everything works together to support Eisenberg. The instruments also introduce subtle dissonances, sustaining tensions, and, at key moments, carrying melodic material. As the track develops, these elements accumulate and recede in cycles, allowing Eisenberg’s vocal line to remain centered while the arrangement continuously reshapes the emotional landscape.

That interplay becomes even more apparent when the music leans toward familiar stylistic territory. While the album draws from 70s folk and singer-songwriter traditions, it rarely settles into them. “Another Lifetime Floats Away” presents a lyrical surface, but Eisenberg’s melodic choices of sustaining tension notes against chord tones and allowing phrases to linger without clear resolution is not a common sound in those styles. “The Ultraworld” begins in a folk-adjacent environment, expanding outward, incorporating angular melodic movement and a shift into a Latin-inflected rhythmic feel before returning. These are not departures so much as expansions, folk language filtered through a more exploratory harmonic and rhythmic sensibility.

“Vanity Paradox” and “Curious Bird” extend this approach into rhythm and phrasing. Both tracks employ guitar figures that suggest traditional patterns, but their rhythmic placement is subtly displaced, creating forward motion that resists predictability. Familiar gestures are presented, then quietly altered just enough to destabilize expectation.

Across the record, Eisenberg’s vocal delivery provides a stabilizing force. The phrasing is precise and rhythmically grounded. Her singing is also flexible enough to carry emotional nuance. This balance is especially evident in “Another Lifetime Floats Away,” where the narrative unfolds with an anchored story, even as the surrounding music introduces harmonic surprises.

“Will You Dare” offers one of the clearest encapsulations of the album’s method. Framed within a traditional country-adjacent feel, the song initially suggests a familiar harmonic path. But just as that expectation settles, the progression shifts, introducing subtle deviations that accumulate over time. Rhythmic nuances and instrumental interplay add further tension, and the bridge moves into intervallic territory in the vocals that break from the established idiom. Familiarity functions as a setup for a surprising destination.

Wendy-Eisenberg-5-Finger-ReviewWhat ultimately defines Wendy Eisenberg is not its accessibility, but its control. These songs are well-constructed and retain the unpredictability of improvisation. Surprise is no longer a byproduct of the moment as in improvisation, but it is embedded in the composition itself.

In that sense, this record does not resolve the tension between improvisation and structure; it preserves it. And in doing so, Eisenberg demonstrates that constraint, rather than limiting expression, can sharpen the music to its core.
