Katy Perry | 143 Review
by Bea Willis
After a four-year hiatus, Katy Perry returns to the pop spotlight with her seventh studio album, 143. Perry’s previous work has built her a strong reputation for delivering infectious pop anthems. Perry described this album as a “dance party” where “everyone’s invited.” As for the title’s meaning, 143 has personal significance for Perry, representing her “angel number.” While the title may hint at a new direction for Perry, the album itself largely stays in territory reminiscent of Perry’s earlier hits, with a mix of dance-pop, catchy hooks, and guest appearances from a diverse roster of artists, including 21 Savage, Kim Petras, Doechii, and JID.
The album opens with “Woman’s World,” a track that tries to balance fun and empowerment but ultimately feels shallow. Perry celebrates women’s strength and resilience, but the production by Dr. Luke sounds and feels a bit dated, failing to capture any real freshness. The vocal production is also processed and stale. The song has drawn attention for its ties to the controversial producer, and while it’s an energetic dance-pop track, its message doesn’t quite land as the feminist anthem it aspires to be.
“Gorgeous” (featuring Kim Petras) is a fun moment of electro-pop on the album. Petras’ playful vocals definitely add spice and variety to the album’s flow for sure. “Gimme Gimme” (featuring 21 Savage) and “I’m His, He’s Mine” (featuring Doechii) are where Perry continues to shines in collaboration mode. “Gimme Gimme” brings a fun, playful energy with 21 Savage’s laid-back flow complementing Perry’s bright vocals, while “I’m His, He’s Mine” blends a catchy beat with sass and seduction, driven by Doechii’s confident verses.
A glimpse of Perry’s past brilliance enters with “Lifetimes,” a song that embodies Perry’s knack for combining universal themes of love with a personal touch. The lyrics, repeating “I’ll love you for life,” offer a profound sense of emotional vulnerability that fans of Perry’s softer ballads will find resonance in. The production doesn’t overshadow the sentiment, making it one of the more memorable tracks on the album, though this is not an earworm by any means.
On the flip side, “Artificial” (featuring JID) and “Truth” don’t break any new ground sonically but continue to show Perry’s love for danceable beats and catchy choruses. They fit well within the pop formula but don’t push the envelope in terms of innovation.
143 plays it safe, leaning heavily on tried-and-true pop formulas that worked for Perry in her earlier years. The album might offer moments of genuine appeal that will entertain listeners who can relate to over-processed electro-pop. While it does not recapture the magic of Perry’s earlier works, like Teenage Dream, for those craving a light, energetic pop album, 143 offers enough hooks and sing-along moments to keep the party going.
