Matt Corby | Tragic Magic Review

Matt-Corby-5-Finger-Review-CDSome albums grab attention through constant change. Listening to Tragic Magic, what is interesting is its consistency. Across thirteen tracks, Matt Corby draws from soul, folk, alternative pop, and vintage studio textures, yet what stood out most during listening wasn’t any particular stylistic influence. It was the way the songs grow. Corby starts with a musical idea and expands outward from it, using texture, vocal layers, and production details to create movement.

“Big Ideas” opens with little more than bass and voice before the drums settle into a laid-back ’70s soul-rock pocket. A recurring guitar figure quickly establishes itself as a central motive, returning often enough to become part of the song’s identity. The harmony remains surprisingly simple, revolving around a two-chord framework that feels compelled to create a mood. What is noticeable is how the arrangement continued to evolve. The hi-hat becomes more active, vocal doubles begin appearing around the lead, background “oohs” widen the soundstage, and eventually the backing vocals take over entirely while the lead voice steps aside. What could have felt repetitive instead becomes immersive. The track closes with audible breath sounds and a final bass statement.

“Know It All” takes a different route while reinforcing many of the same strengths. It begins with a clicky piano figure and an intimate, almost lo-fi atmosphere builtMatt-Corby-5-Finger-Review-1 around an arpeggiated pattern anchored by a persistent pedal tone. Small production details immediately catch the ear. Glitch-like rhythmic sounds drift through the stereo field, vocal harmonies arrive almost as quickly as the lead itself, and the track develops a subtle tension between its homemade character and its increasingly polished production. As the song unfolds, additional vocal layers, string textures, and keyboard swells gradually transform the sonic environment, pushing the music toward a larger emotional climax without ever abandoning the piano figure that anchors it. Dissonances rub against the pedal tone before resolving, giving the track an undercurrent of unease beneath its smoother surface. The movement from lo-fi intimacy toward a fuller, hi-fi presentation mirrors the album’s broader tendency to build outward from a simple starting point.

One of the more interesting discoveries in the credits is how much of Tragic Magic comes directly from Corby himself. Beyond the vocals, he contributes extensively on drums, bass, piano, synthesizers, guitar, percussion, organ, and Mellotron, making the album feel less like a singer-songwriter project and more like a carefully constructed studio work shaped by a single musical vision. Knowing this after the fact helps explain why the album feels so unified. The bass figures, piano patterns, vocal stacks, and rhythmic details often sound less like separate contributions and more like different extensions of the same musical personality. Key collaborators Chris Collins and Dann Hume help shape the sonic architecture, while background vocal contributions from Nat Dunn and Meg Mac, along with selective horn and string arrangements, add color and depth without pulling attention away from the songs themselves.

Matt-Corby-5-Finger-Review-2What makes Tragic Magic compelling is its patience. Rather than chasing hooks or constant stylistic reinvention, Corby allows songs to grow from the inside out. A simple groove gathers momentum through added percussion. A piano figure becomes the foundation for an increasingly expansive arrangement. Vocal layers arrive, textures widen, and small production details gradually reshape the emotional landscape. The result is an album that finds its strength in development.
