Dharma Down | Owl Dreams Review
by Illiam Sebitz
Dharma Down’s debut album, Owl Dreams, is a musically diverse project that is unique in its blending of modern jazz, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European influences. From the first track, listeners are treated with the interplay of rhythms, harmonies, and melodies that reflect the group’s rich backgrounds and inspirations. Owl Dreams is eleven tracks that feature the individual technical skills of each musician building to establish a collective creativity. Each track is a unique experience, resulting in an album full of surprising shifts, textures, and musical craftsmanship.
The ensemble, consisting of Mike Effenberger on piano, Duncan Hardy on alto saxophone and qanun, Scott Kiefner on acoustic bass, and John Mettam on drums, demonstrates an impressive synergy throughout the album. Each member is distinctly heard in the musical conversation that collectively encapsulates the entire soundscape of the album.
“Jalla Man” makes for a powerful opening statement, driven by an energetic groove anchored by Mettam’s tight drumming and Kiefner’s resonant, woody bass lines. Effenberger’s piano voicings add depth, shaping the harmonic landscape, while Hardy introduces the melody on the qanun, skillfully bridging the worlds of jazz and classical Arabic music. Hardy’s qanun solo stands out as a highlight, showcasing the instrument’s rich timbral colors and unique microtonal expressiveness—qualities that enrich the ensemble’s world music palette. The group navigates these diverse musical styles effortlessly, demonstrating versatility and impressive musicianship.
“Among The Reeds” is a Hardy composition that truly shines with cross-cultural expression. The Arabic modal harmonic pattern and modern jazz world groove serve as a foundation for a multifaceted piece that shifts through different textures and rhythms. Hardy’s alto saxophone lines flow with the rich harmonic accompaniment provided by Effenberger. World music fans will appreciate the combination of modern modal jazz and melodic modes from traditional Arabic music. Building on the art of improvisation that defines pitches and patterns in the development of a piece of music. Each section’s evolution highlights the ensemble’s agility, moving between subtle modal flexibility and explosive group interaction.
“Ex One Blues” features a compelling blend of swing, funk, and Arabic modal elements that continue the exploration East and West musical systems. The melody plays with a call-and-response format, offset by a Latin-inspired montuno figure that adds a rhythmic complexity. Hardy’s saxophone solo is fluid, moving effortlessly over the rhythmic foundation laid by Mettam and Kiefner. Mettam’s drumming is particularly noteworthy, as he interacts with Hardy throughout the solo, adding texture and depth without overshadowing the melody. The emotional peaks of the piece are driven by these rhythmic exchanges, giving the track an unrestrained energy.
The interplay between each musician is what defines Owl Dreams as a compelling modern jazz and world record. The integration of maqam scales into modern jazz contexts presents a unique melodic language, which the ensemble meets with precision and creativity. Hardy’s performance on the alto saxophone and the qanun is particularly impressive, as he shifts effortlessly between the two, each instrument bringing distinct tonal qualities to the compositions. His qanun playing, for instance, allows for intricate microtonal nuances that deepen the melodic texture of the tracks.
Mettam’s drumming provides a rhythmic foundation that always lays down a solid and dynamic feel while constantly responding to the soloists and enhancing their expression without overwhelming them. His work on “Ex One Blues” exemplifies his skill at blending different rhythmic influences—from swing to Latin-inspired patterns—creating a multilayered rhythmic palette that gives each piece momentum and character.
Effenberger’s piano playing brings a harmonic richness to the album, providing lush chord voicings that respond to the melodic colors. His solo on “Tadafuq” is a standout moment, showcasing his ability to transition from subtle single melodies of harmonic exploration to more driving rhythmic chordal motifs, blending jazz idioms with an impressionistic Arabic music overtone.
Kiefner’s bass lines ground each composition with a sense of solidity, while his solos—especially on “Michel”—explore melodies that are lyrical and deeply expressive. His ability to lock in with Mettam gives the album a powerful emotional resonance.
Owl Dreams is uniquely rewarding, particularly in how it highlights the interplay between the ensemble members. Their interactions reveal a deep commitment to expressing a blend of diverse cultural and musical styles. Dharma Down combines the technical with the emotional, offering listeners a compelling experience. Their ability to integrate maqam scales and rhythmic elements from diverse traditions into a modern jazz context is seamless and striking, resulting in a unique sound that stands apart in today’s world and jazz landscapes.
