Swimming Bell | Charlie Review
by Bea Willis
Swimming Bell, the artistic endeavor helmed by the talented Katie Schottland, introduces us to Charlie, a musical compilation that promises to transport its listeners through a sonic journey reflective of Schottland’s bi-coastal migration and artistic evolution. Released under the banners of Adventure Club Records and Permanent Records, this album is a treasure trove of folk-pop and indie folk brilliance, reminiscent of the soul-stirring ambience of mid-70s Laurel Canyon.
Katie Schottland, with her roots stretching from NYC to LA, crafts Charlie as a profound exploration of the human condition, interweaving introspective lyrics with meticulously woven melodies. The album, influenced by musical luminaries such as Jeff Tweedy, Jason Molina, Neil Young, Gillian Welch, and Beck, is not merely a collection of songs but a poignant narrative of life’s intimate vignettes, encapsulating the essence of emotional and experiential journeying. It represents Schottland’s gift of painting vivid imagery with her music, a skill that garnered her critical acclaim for her previous release, Wild Sight, and named her a “top ten artist to watch” by NPR.
The creation of Charlie began in the twilight of 2019 in Brooklyn, a prelude to the solitude and introspection brought on by the global pandemic. It was in her new abode in Los Angeles that Schottland, alongside co-producer Oli Deakin (Lowpines), breathed life into this album, marking a period of adaptation and creative perseverance. Charlie emerges as a heartfelt ode to love, connection, and the resilience of the human spirit amidst adversity.
Delving into my favorite tracks: “Take It Easy,” “For Al and Lee,” and “Fly Like An Eagle” with their lyrical depth and intricate arrangements with vocal harmonies and emotionally resonant melodies.
“Take It Easy” encapsulates the Americana spirit, weaving a well-sung flowing melody and rich vocal harmonies that envelop the listener in a warm embrace. The production quality is impeccable, with each instrument given space to shine, creating a lush soundscape. The electric guitar solo, adorned with effects, and the subsequent vocal harmonies imbue the track with a swirling, emotional depth, showcasing Schottland’s meticulous attention to the emotional contour of her singing and delivery.
“For Al and Lee,” a heartfelt tribute to friendship and new beginnings, showcases Schottland’s gift for storytelling. The song, inspired by Neil Young’s “Long May You Run,” is a delicate balance of hope and nostalgia, with its light alt-country feel and intricate vocal harmonies. As the song progresses, it blossoms with fuller instrumentation, reflecting the growth and depth of the friendships it celebrates.
Lastly, “Fly Like An Eagle” delivers a catchy folk-rock anthem that captures the listener’s imagination from the first note. The guitar work, both in bends and fills, adds layers of emotional nuance, complemented by Schottland’s expertly layered vocal harmonies. The track is a testament to her ability to blend catchy melodies with profound emotional impact.
Charlie is a narrative of resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of music to forge connections and inspire positivity. Swimming Bell, through Katie Schottland, brings us a fine indie folk and folk-pop album that serves as a reminder of the beauty that surrounds and sustains us, even in the most uncertain of times.
