Neal Francis | Return to Zero Review
by Griff Stevens
Neal Francis’s third studio album, Return to Zero, released on March 14, 2025, under ATO Records, finds him presenting his next evolution of blending timeless rock ‘n’ roll with 1970s-era dance music.
Francis’s journey began with his 2019 debut album, Changes, which drew acclaim for its intoxicating blend of funk, soul, and rock, reminiscent of the late ’60s and ’70s. His 2021 follow-up, In Plain Sight, continued this trajectory, earning praise for its throwback big-band sound that recalls the highs of 1970s funk and swamp rock. With Return to Zero, Francis delves deeper into his musical roots, merging heavy guitar riffs with lush, pulsating grooves, all constructed without digital programming, reflecting his devotion to analog authenticity.
Francis and his stellar ensemble bring vibrant authenticity and an irresistible groove to Return to Zero. Anchored by Francis’s soulful vocals and dynamic keyboards, the band is rounded out by guitarist Kellen Boersma, whose electric and acoustic riffs carve through each track with precision; Mike Starr on bass, whose rhythmic depth and nuanced acoustic guitar add foundational warmth; Collin O’Brien, whose energetic drumming provides the pulsating heartbeat; and percussionist Daniel Villarreal, whose intricate rhythms add layers of texture and sophistication. Together, these musicians deliver a rich tapestry of sound, blending rock’s bold charisma, soul’s emotional depth, and disco’s infectious rhythms, all captured live in an organic, analog atmosphere that resonates with timeless vitality.
The album opens with “Need You Again,” a track that puts listeners in a groove-heavy soundscape with funky guitar, danceable backbeat, and Francis’ catchy vocals. This is followed by “Don’t Wait,” which leans into sweeping keyboards, big backing female voices, and a bassline that practically struts. “Broken Glass,” featuring the Brooklyn-based band Say She She, takes a psychedelic turn, merging hypnotic guitar parts, full keyboard sustaining chords, and Francis’ stunning falsetto singing.
“Back It Up” has a syncopated bass and synth lines and a playful melody sung with passion by Francis. “What’s Left of Me” presents a different feel, built on a 70s rock vibe and lyrics reflecting on the challenges of maintaining relationships while on the road.
The album’s production continues Francis’s commitment to musical authenticity. Recorded live with his touring band and co-produced with longtime collaborator Sergio Rios, the record exudes a warm, organic feel that pulses with energy, never feeling overproduced. This approach allows the energy and passion of the live performers to shine through, ensuring each track feels spirited and dynamic.
Return to Zero is a groove-heavy odyssey that blends ’70s rock, funk, and disco into a sound that plays like a series of catchy grooves with timeless appeal. Francis’s nuanced approach to expanding his sonic horizons gives the album the confidence of an artist who has truly found his stride. Return to Zero is Neal Francis offering a rich homage to his musical influences while pushing the boundaries of his sound. It’s an album that invites listeners to dance, reflect, and, above all, enjoy the ride.
